Khartoum Approves 50% Transport Fare Reduction for Students in Partnership with Human Appeal

The coordination meeting between the Higher Council for Human Resources Development and Labor in Khartoum State, the Khartoum Locality, and the Khartoum Transport Company has approved a proposal to reduce public transport fares by 50% for students and offer symbolic prices for citizens as part of efforts to encourage residents to return to the state.

Acting Minister Dhulfikar Ali Mohammed explained that the initiative will be implemented in partnership with the humanitarian organization Human Appeal after completing financial and technical arrangements. The plan includes a three-month pilot phase to evaluate the program’s effectiveness before expanding it further.

The Transport Company has been requested to submit operational cost estimates and the number of buses required for the project. Meanwhile, Khartoum Locality reported challenges in reactivating some routes due to low population density and limited compliance from private vehicle operators, but confirmed its intention to reorganize transport hubs and restore them to their pre-war locations.

The Khartoum Transport Company also reaffirmed its commitment to providing buses for inactive routes at reduced fares, despite rising fuel and maintenance costs, in a move aimed at reviving urban mobility and easing citizens’ return to normal life.

Economic observers view the initiative as a symbolic yet practical step toward rebuilding Khartoum’s post-war infrastructure and restoring essential public services to support displaced residents.
